All about the Root Chakra

The First Chakra, called ‘Muladhara’ also known as the Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine. This Chakra is associated with the earth element, linked to your ability to feel grounded and firmly rooted in life.

The Chakras originated in India between 1500 and 500 BCE, Chakras are described as seven wheels of energy that move through your body, starting at the crown of your head and traveling down to the base of your spine. This system is used as a tool for understanding the different levels of the human being, and for developing awareness within ourselves.

Muladhara is associated with your sense of security, familial relationships, and your feeling of home. When energy flows through the first chakra, you feel firmly grounded in yourself and the world around you. Stress gradually dissipates and you’ll be able to focus more efficiently to ensure your needs are met. If you’re unbalanced or have a blockage in your Root Chakra, it can lead you to feel insecure, anxious, unstable, tired, and even constipated.

There are many ways you can realign your Chakras when you begin to feel unbalanced. For the Root Chakra, you can practice yoga asanas that specifically target your needs. Intense stretches, deep squats, and seated poses all help connect you to the earth. You can also recenter your Root Chakra through Ujjayi or Victorious Breath — a Pranayama technique that is both energizing and calming.

Massage can even stimulate energy flow to the root chakra by focusing on the lower back and spine, gluteal muscles, legs, and feet.

Dandelion, hibiscus, and cinnamon bark are also said to assist this chakra. Apart from being delicious, cinnamon has also been linked to helping with overall health by aiding circulation and promoting digestion. Hibiscus is an astringent, that helps nourish the waters of our body, our blood, kidneys, and urinary tract. So, if you can’t focus while meditating or practicing yoga, try having a nice cup of tea first and allow its intention to flow through you. Everyone heals and experiences differently, so it's important to do what is most comfortable and beneficial for you!
